• Express Mail Service – EMS is an express delivery service which connects more than 190 countries and territories worldwide.
• A priority mail service – EMS is provided by the Post as their postal express service for documents and merchandise. EMS takes priority over other postal services.
• Convenient – EMS can be sent from Post Office counters in over 190 countries or it can be collected from customer’s premises. The EMS network has the most customer access points in the world based on Post Office counters.
• Largest delivery network worldwide – EMS postal operators have the largest last mile coverage worldwide supported by the postal delivery network.
• EMS offers the following main characteristics *:
  • acceptance at any Post Office or pick up from customer’s premises,
  • priority handling from acceptance to delivery in the destination country or territory,
  • end-to-end tracking,
  • signature on delivery,
  • delivery of items at addressee’s premises.

1. What is the EMS Cooperative?

The EMS Cooperative is run by members of the Universal Postal Union (UPU), a specialized agency of the United Nations. The EMS Cooperative aims to promote cooperation between member postal organizations to provide their customers with a high quality global EMS service.

Since its creation, the EMS Cooperative has strengthened the EMS product through the establishment of common standards and procedures. The EMS Cooperative provides a range of activities and measurements to help postal operators improve and deliver a high-quality EMS service, members of the EMS Cooperative have access to the full range of services.

The EMS Cooperative does not have a legal status of its own, nor does it constitute a cooperative company as defined in private law.

2. What is the role of the EMS Unit?

The EMS Unit works on behalf of the designated-operators who are members of the EMS Cooperative and is part of the International Bureau of the UPU in Berne, Switzerland.

The EMS Unit provides a global focus to allow the worldwide EMS network to better meet the needs of postal customers by providing a number of services to support EMS operators.

The EMS Unit is an administrative body working for postal operators and does not deal with individual customer inquiries.

3. Who are the members of the EMS Cooperative?

Membership of the EMS Cooperative is on a voluntary basis, and more than 150 EMS operators are currently members, covering over 90% of global EMS traffic. Any postal organization of a UPU member country that is an EMS owner-exporter or only an importer of EMS items can join the EMS Cooperative. 4. I have just sent an item using EMS, how do I find out where my item is?

Please contact the postal operator that sent your EMS item, or the EMS operator in the destination country tracking details.

5. Why haven’t I heard of EMS in my own country?

Sometimes postal operators do not use “EMS” in their name and brand their EMS delivery service using a different name e.g. Speed post or International Express Post. Despite this, if they are a member of the EMS Cooperative, they will be following the same high standards and procedures of all other EMS Cooperative members.
